Physicon-2013

Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences, true to its mission of "harnessing advances in medical sciences towards curing disease" and also ,true to its vision of "joining hands with other institutes of repute, towards research activities aimed at a healthy tomorrow", had the privilege of organizing 'PHYSICON-2013'- the XVII (Silver Jubilee) Annual National Conference of the Physiological Society of India.

'PHYSICON-2013' under the patronship of Sri. Kamineni Suryanarayana garu, CMD, KES and Dr. Kamineni Shashidhar, Secretary, KES was organized by the Department of Physiology, with the Theme:  "Physiology of today is the Medicine of tomorrow" from 09th to 11th December 2013 at the serene KIMS campus located at Sreepuram, Narketpally, Nalgonda Dist. (Andhra Pradesh).

Dr. Shruti Mohanty Principal, KIMS was the Organizing Committee Chairman and Dr. B.R. Doddamani Professor & HOD of Physiology was the Organizing Secretary of 'PHYSICON-2013'. Dr.Shashi Bala Singh (Director-DIPAS/DRDO) was the Chief Guest during the inaugural ceremony.

The 3 days scientific festival in which 500 delegates from all over India and abroad participated comprised of eight symposiums, Key Note Addresses, Special Lecture, PSI oration lectures, Plenary Lectures, Silver Jubilee Lectures, Invited Lectures and Free paper presentations (oral & poster).

The prestigious Prof.S.C.Mahalanobish Memorial Oration-2013 was delivered by Prof.Nanduri R Prabhakar (Harold Hines Professor of Medicine, University of Chicago) on the topic: "Sleep apnea and autonomic morbidities: insights from experimental models.

The core of the sessions was formed by the symposiums on various relevant topics from the molecular-systems level. Noteworthy among them was the "Indo- Brazilian joint international symposium on cardio-respiratory physiology "supported by:  Sociedade Brasileira de Fisiologia & Physiological Society of India. It is probably the first of its kind being organized in such a forum in India. Prof.Benedito H.Machado (University of Sao Paulo, Reveiro Preto, Brazil) who is elected as the chairperson of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) conference 2017 was the moderator of this symposium.

The other symposium topics also aptly reflected the theme "Physiology of today is the Medicine of tomorrow" with their clinically relevant content.

Apart from the "PSI Oration awards for 2013","Vidyasagar university young scientist award" and "Young Scientist Award" awarded by The Physiological Society of India were given.

An innovative event during the conference was the Luncheon Workshop on "Ethical Authorship", endorsed by Committee on Publication Ethics [COPE], United Kingdom, conducted by Prof.Kusal Das - International Advisory Group, COPE, UK and Prof.K.K.Deepak- Executive Editor-Indian Journal & Physiology Pharmacology.

Noted speakers and delegates from all over India and abroad participated in the event. Pyne(Hyderabad) , Prof.Benedito H.Machado(Brazil) , Dr.Thiago Dos Santos Moreira(Brazil) , Prof.K.K.Deepak( AIIMS, NewDelhi) , Dr.Ganesh Kumar(Chicago), Prof.Kusal K.Das(Bijapur) ,Dr.Usha Panjwani,(DIPAS) Prof.Rashmi Mathur( AIIMS, NewDelhi) ,Dr.Sikha Saha(UK) ,Dr.Rammohan V.Maikala (USA), Prof.Shivaprasad S.Goudar(Belgaum) ,Dr.Sarmishtha Ghosh(Malayasia), Dr.Rashmi Vyas (Vellore),Dr.Verna Blewett(Australia) Prof.Annie Q Hasan(Hyderabad), Dr.Suchandra Chatterjee(Mumbai), Dr.Tandra Chakraborty (USA) Prof.Amar K.Chandra (Kolkata) and Prof. Nandakumaran M(Kuwait)  just to name a few.

South Asian Association of Physiologists (SAAP) endorsed 'PHYSICON-2013' as it accorded greater recognition of joint efforts of physiology community in South Asia to enhance their teaching and research in Physiology and it also appreciated the organizers for putting together exciting programs that evinced a high level of interest in the participants.

For its recognition in encouraging the scientific temper among the community, the A.P.Medical Council awarded 15 credit hours to 'PHYSICON-2013'.

The scientific atmosphere was also accompanied by cultural events which saw active participation from the guests and delegates.

In a nutshell, the participants enjoyed the scientific festival served along with delicious food and the warm hospitality in the pleasant atmosphere of KIMS campus and returned home safely with sweet everlasting memories of "PHYSICON-2013" with a promise to meet again.
